Spring Clean your Skin: Our tips for a beauty detox

It has felt like a really long winter but at last spring is on its way. During the winter months the colder weather and central heating join forces to zap our skin’s natural glow and it is often left looking and feeling kind of lacklustre.

But it’s time to come out of hibernation and get ready to reclaim that glow, and what is the best way to do that? With a skin detox of course! And because we know how busy you all are, your good friends at Love My Skin have put together our best tips for flushing out those winter toxins and putting the spring back into your skin.

Out with the old

Go and have a look in your makeup bag right now. We bet it needs a sort out – right? Makeup expires and brushes get mega dirty over time so your first job is to chuck out anything in your kit that you know is getting past its best before date. Next, take all of your grubby brushes and clean them. Our best tip for cleaning brushes is to gently rub raw coconut oil into the bristles before giving them a good wash with a mild baby shampoo and warm water until the water runs clear, then leave them to air dry.

After you have removed all your old stuff, clean out your makeup bag or treat yourself to a new one and wipe all of your surviving makeup with a baby wipe before putting it back.

How much better does that feel? Give yourself a high five and move onto tip number 2…

Shed your winter skin

In order to find your new season glow you need to scrub away the dead cells that winter left behind. Exfoliating will leave your skin feeling super smooth and looking immediately brighter. Our general rule of thumb is to never put something on your body that you wouldn’t consume yourself, our friend and health and beauty expert Elissa Corrigan recommends making your own natural scrub using Pink Himalayan Salt and Coconut Oil. Remember to massage gently – think about exfoliating and not scrubbing which may harm your delicate skin – rinse away with warm water and pat your skin dry. Check results – you’ll see an instant zing, we guarantee it.

Get flush

How many times have you heard it? Hydration is vital for your skin and your body, and water will literally flush you from the inside out. Sip your water throughout the day rather than gulping it all down in one go, we start every morning with a cup of hot water and a wedge of fresh lemon and we drink cold, filtered water throughout the day. Once you get into the habit, you will notice a positive difference to your skin and how you feel too. Go and find yourself a snazzy water bottle so you can accessorise at the same time (any excuse to go shopping).

Get fresh

Your diet plays a massive part in your skin’s health and overall appearance and what you put into your body will determine what shines back out. There’s no need to overhaul your whole diet though, success is generally achieved by taking a few small steps at a time, and you can do this by introducing some new friends into your fridge.

Our favourite skin clearing foods are:

Fresh berries which are bursting with antioxidants! Whizz a few handfuls of your fave berries into a smoothie for breakfast for a fab way to kick-start your day, or keep a small box handy for snacks on your desk.

Beetroot is packed full of vitamin A, potassium, sodium and calcium which all combine to make it an awesome all body cleanser. We love it sliced up onto a salad but you can add it into your favourite juice recipe too.

Fish that is high in Omega-3 such as salmon and mackerel are perfect for combating acne and inflammation in your skin, try to eat it twice a week.

Dark chocolate is another powerful antioxidant and with Easter on the horizon, eating darker chocolate means you don’t have to deprive yourself too much. Remember to look for chocolate that is high in cocoa – preferably 80% or more.
